Village Magazine Article - June

Well we’re off! We've had our official Opening Day and folks are beginning to get their
arms, legs, shoulders and knees warmed up. Wow it’s an all-over workout!
The Woes of the Green
As I mentioned last month that we’d had a whole menagerie of animals gracing (or maybe I
should say grazing) our green, we are now seeing the downside. A lot of holes have been
dug in the green by the various wildlife forms and these are proving very difficult to fix. Not
only have the holey areas to be patched and covered with chicken wire which causes great
problems when bowling – no!, numpties out there, not when we are bowling - but the fact
that we have to remove/replace the wire mesh before/after we bowl. More significantly, we
have to arrange the rinks to avoid the larger holes to ensure as smooth a bowling surface
as possible. The test will come when we host the county trials. Their umpires are sticklers
for rectitude so we’ll find out how bad they think the green is. And there’s more (as Jimmy
Cricket says), I’ve mentioned before that our green is prone to moss and Healf & Safty has
declared you can only use seaweed and iron to cure it which takes some long time. So,
while it bowls well enough, as Russ Abbott used to say (OK I like the joke, alright!) it looks
crepe. O me miserum! (As Cicero used to say).
Open Day
A great crowd of villagers descended on us on Bank Holiday Monday as our now annual and
increasingly famous Open Day took place. We were especially pleased to see lots of
youngsters from small to large come along and have a go. The weather was not brilliant
but at least we no real rain. The food we were selling was a massive hit – bacon on butties,
rolls, baps, flower cakes, barm cakes or whatever you yokels down here call them, burgers,
sliced cake etc etc - you name it we sold it. Literally we sold out! Of course, plenty of ale
was supped but no-one as far as I know fell over on the green. Let’s hope we attract some
new members.
A huge THANK YOU to Christine Middleton and her team and to all who helped tirelessly on
the day be it in the kitchen, bar or green. Well done, all!
