Knights 2 Wood Huge Success

Posted by Oiver Moody on 8 August 2019

Though the sun was hiding behind the clouds, the weather was set fair on Sunday as the players gathered in the club house and awaited the draw.  After the second match was drawn the atmosphere was already excitable as the 2 Gary's, Plant and Shakespeare were drawn against each other, and a few names later there were gasps as the mens captain, Ollie Moody, and his vice, Luke Vizor were set to clash. Elsewhere in the first round eyes were drawn to Joe Stout against Fred Waite and Phil Cook against new bowler Teresa Moon, as the winner was set to face Josie Cook who had a first round bye.  As the games commenced it appeared the games that attracted the most attention may be one sided affairs as Gary Plant rushed into an 8-0 lead while Luke went 5-1 up. Cue the comeacks as Gary Shakespeare won 6 of the next 7 points, although he came up short, losing 11-8, while despite drawing level at 5-5, Ollie then only scored one more point, eventually losing 11-6.  As the next 6 matches commenced, Bob George breezed through 11-1 while Margaret Douthwaite and Joe Stout both fought hard to 11-8 victories over Hanna Gauld and Fred Waite respectively, while Phil Cook triumphed 11-4 to set up a clash with his wife in the second round.  As a break was taken for lunch, the draw was looking strong in the top and the bottom half, with Gary Plant, Luke, Bob George and Joe Stout looking dangerous in the top, while Margaret Douthwaite, Brian Coles and the Ken Hayward winner 2 years ago, Mike Middleton featuring in the bottom.

After the lunch break the second round began and almost straight out the gate there appeared to be an upset on the cards as Chris Middleton played some fantastic bowls to get 9-6 ahead against Gary Plant, although two doubles saw Gary sneak ahead 10-9, before Chris made it 10-10, leaving a one end shoot out.  Gary proved to strong and headed to a quarter final against Gavin Newman, following his hard fought 11-9 victory against good friend Pete Bunce.  Luke changed woods but continued his quest to retain his title with an 11-6 win against Tony Packham giving him a tie against Bob George who saw off Joe Stout 11-6.  The bottom half saw Margaret defeat John Staley 12-3 to book a date with Phil, who won the battle of the Cook's, defeating his wife 11-8, while the final quarter final the battle of the Brian's as Mr Coles and Mr Douthwaite would meet following defeats of Jean Siddall and Mike Middleton respectively.  Gary Plant eased to an 11-7 victory to book his place in the quarter final, where he would meet Bob George, who beat Luke in an up and down affair which saw the players tied at 9-9 after after Luke won 3 ends in a row.  Meanwhile Phil and Margaret played 16 ends as Phil edged the victory 11-10, in a game that never saw more than a two shot lead either way.  Brian Coles on the othere hand scored five doubles as he eased to a 12-2 victory and book his place in the smei final, looking to reach a second consecutive semi final.

In the first semi final, a cagey affair saw Gary and Bob level at 5-5, 8-8 and 9-9, before Bob, holding 1, drew a second to book his spot in the final.  In the second semi, Phil scored 2, 2, 2, to take a 6-3 lead, however Brian scored eight of the next nine points to book his place against Bob, hoping to go one better than last year.  The final itself was a game of two halves as Brian Coles played some impecable bowls to control the game and seem to have one hand on the trophy as he led by eight shots, before Bob found his length, and rhythm, coming right back and triumphing 15-13 and claiming the Knights Two Wood 2019 in the process.
